About The Director

Why this project matters:

In 2023, “Climate Refugees” (2010) will embark on an extraordinary journey to the moon. This Sundance Award winning film has been chosen as the sole documentary in an art and humanity time capsule, which will be launched into space and find its resting place on the lunar surface, potentially preserved for millions or even billions of years. Joining the original documentary film on this lunar mission is the poster for Climate Refugees 2 and the sequel’s narrative outline.

The Lunar Art Mission: Both projects are launched on Space X with Space Blue (Lunaprise on NASA IM-1 Mission) and will be placed into a digital archive on the moon.

In the scorching summer of 2023, amidst record-breaking temperatures, filmmaker and artist Michael P. Nash received astounding news. His 2010 documentary, “Climate Refugees,” was chosen as the sole documentary for inclusion in the prestigious Lunaprise time capsule—an extraordinary repository of arts and humanity destined for the moon’s surface, where it could endure for eons. Rewinding to 1971, during the Apollo 15 mission, astronauts Scott and Irwin took nearly 400 stamps to the lunar surface, an act that led to repercussions due to their unauthorized sale for personal gain, resulting in reprimand and a ban from future space missions. These stamps have since become coveted collectibles. Fast-forwarding to 2023, Nash, in tribute to the lunar legacy, embarked on an artistic venture. He transformed images captured from the film crew’s extensive global travels in 2008 and 2009 across 48 countries into exquisite postage stamp art, highlighting the plight of the human face of climate change. This unique collection has the potential for official stamp recognition in various nations. Notably, among the 33 distinct artworks destined for the moon, this collection unveils 11 exceptionally rare, one-of-a-kind stamps.

At the heart of the Climate Refugees Lunar Art Collection, curated by artist and filmmaker Michael P. Nash in collaboration with Space Blue, emerges a formidable coalition of twenty artists from across the globe. Their unified mission is to magnify the human dimension of climate change, a subject illuminated in Nash’s acclaimed documentary. Recently, the award-winning “Climate Refugees” became the sole documentary film curated into an arts and humanity lunar time capsule heading to the moon in 2023, marking a momentous acknowledgment of Nash’s unyielding commitment to this critical message. This integration inspired the filmaker to orchestrate a worldwide collaboration of artists, driven by the urgency to amplify the plight of climate refugees. The lunar invitation strikes a profound chord, recognizing the capsule’s broader purpose—transcending the boundaries of space and time to illuminate issues of monumental significance. This mirrors the essence behind the collaborating artists shared dedication to raise consciousness, nurture compassion, and catalyze transformation as Nash’s art collection and film ascend to lunar realms, epitomizing the unifying potency of creativity, offering profound insights into the human experience, rendered into a visual language that reverberates across the vast expanse of time and space.

Between 2008 and 2009, filmmaker and artist Michael P. Nash embarked on a transformative global expedition, seeking out the human stories behind climate change while shooting the award-winning film “Climate Refugees.” This life-altering journey led him through 48 countries, documenting the profound impact of climate change on individuals and communities forced to relocate in search of food and water.  It was these encounters that served as the heart of his art collection, “Warhol Had: Climate Refugees Lunar Collection,” where he skillfully translates these experiences into potent works of art. Within this artwork, the artist intertwines the past world of Warhol and the current world of so many climate refugees, delivering a collection that serves as a poignant testament to the urgent challenges of our time.

As the walls seemed to close in during the Covid pandemic, filmmaker and artist Michael P. Nash found himself in isolation, living cut off from normality.  Prompted by a dystopian short story he had crafted a decade earlier, titled “The Gas Mask Time Traveler,” Nash embarked on a creative journey, fueling a mixed-media art collection centered around his female superhero creation, the Native American protagonist from the future known as Last Buffalo who attempts to warn the past about the horrible world they will live in, if they don’t change their way of life. Over what the artist calls his quarantined years, this collection flourished, expanding to encompass hundreds of pieces, among them an environmental series aptly christened “Warhol Had: Gas Mask Time Traveler,” where he seamlessly merged the past world of Warhol with the dystopian world of tomorrow.

ART IMPACT PROJECT AND COLLABORATION

What is the Climate Refugees project?

The genesis of this endeavor can be traced back to Michael P. Nash’s groundbreaking documentary, “Climate Refugees.” The film premiered at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival, and went on to screen around the world winning many domestic and international awards. Climate Refugees illuminated the human face of climate change, becoming an instrument for change, screened by Presidents, Prime Ministers, policy makers and global distribution on Netflix. This powerful cinematic work illuminated the human impact of climate change, giving a voice to the victims of our changing climate. For his work, the filmmaker was hailed by MovieMaker Magazine in 2010 as one of the “Top 10 Filmmakers For The Planet.”

Based on assets from the film, SpaceBlue has curated artists from around the world to collaborate with Nash on an art collection titled “The Climate Refugees Art Collection,” The collection goal is to drive attention to this global issue. Creating content for positive change is something important to Michael Nash,  who sits on an Advisory Board for the United Nations that focuses on creating narratives that drive positive change.
